.Helping & Counselling Skills
With life constantly changing it is not unusual for people to seek some form of help at some point. Help to cope with emotional issues which can affect their relationships and mental well-being. Difficulties like job security, money concerns or stress and anxiety all can impact our self-esteem.
Developing helping and counselling skills will help you begin to support those people around who may feel that they have no-one to talk to. Sometimes they need help even if they have a good family support network. You will not judge them if they feel anxious or depressed. And, don’t forget, you will be able to use these skills both formally and informally!
What’s in the course?
You will start and explore the context of Professional Counselling, particularly the the difference between helping relationships & counselling. Then you’ll move onto the different kinds of communication skills for use in helping and relationships. In module 3, we will delve into the different approaches to using counselling and helping skills. Moving on, we’ll be looking in depth at how we manage the helping relationship. Finally, we explore ourselves through reflection and self-awareness.
As you develop your helping skills, you will be able to encourage the person to try and see the events from alternative perspectives to help them cope better. You’ll understand the importance of talking in a ‘safe’ place in an uninterrupted manner about what is happening, or has happened in their life, and how they might feel about it.
Professional counselling requires a deeper application of practical skills that requires further training. There are a number of specific fields like addiction, anxiety, depression, eating disorders and bereavement. All these require a deeper knowledge of the complexities of the human psyche are required, however, this introductory course will provide an excellent foundation!
WHO IS THIS FOR...
This Certificate in Helping and Counselling Skills is designed as a basic introduction to helping and counselling for those who have had no previous experience of, or training in, the field of counselling. HOW WILL IT HELP YOU BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE
This interesting course will allow you to make a more informed choice as to whether to peruse vocational training towards a possible career in counselling, or whether to peruse a career in an advisory role, e.g. welfare advice work, providing general advice and guidance where helping and counselling skills would be really useful. It will also improve your listening and communication skills and provide an excellent foundation of skills that you can practice to help your family, friends and work colleagues.
THIS COULD LEAD TO...
You could use this course to start working in volunteering in several advice based and support roles like student services in schools, colleges and universities. This will also be a good foundation should you want to join an organisation who select and train their own counsellors like Relate or Cruse. Or any roles where counselling skills will be helpful.
