Food, mood and mental health can affect what we eat, how much we eat, and when we eat. They can all be linked to our mood at the time of eating. Just as the food we have chosen can affect the way we feel and our mood. It can be a vicious circle! Here, we will look at how to change what we eat to feel better about ourselves and banish feelings of sluggishness, low energy and low mood.
Food, mood & mental health – What will I learn?
Over the course you will learn about the link between food and mood and why we don’t always eat healthily. We’ll look at how food affects mood in practical terms as well as in scientific terms. We’ll explore the Enteric Nervous System (ENS) and how the ENS acts as a ‘second brain’ (yes, really!), as well as introduce you to your microbiome.
It’s all about understanding a whole-body approach and how diet can positively affect mood. How our neurotransmitters work and influence our decisions and general ways to get the most out of food.
In the second module, we take a closer look at what makes for a healthy brain. You’ll find out what nutrients are required to maximise brain health and where to get them. In this module we look at foods that trick the brain into overeating and damage the brain.. We finish off with the importance of water and what counts towards the water intake.
The third module is more of a theory session. Starting by examining food labels. Examine what they saying and how they might influence our choices when we understand what they mean. In the second lesson – it’s all about cravings, the reasons for cravings and how to combat them!
Module four is about good food sources and choices and the importance of planning what eat and when. When you plan, you can include informed choices that will help lift your mood, aid against depression, or select the best foods for alertness and energy. We also take a peek at mindful eating.
The final module wraps everything up with maintaining a healthy body and mind. Starting with weight management, we look at exactly what the Body Mass Index is and why it is important. We delve into the dangers of crash dieting and why they fail with a focus on the Atkins Diet and ketosis. Then discuss how to maintain weight loss through positive esteem, and of course, a note to exercise! The very last part of this amazing journey into food, mood and mental health will see us look at the kinds of supplements you can use to support your mood, where to get professional help if you need it, and a return to the importance of mindfulness.
