A teaching and learning support assistant (LSA) can be male or female, and any age. You will work in a number of exciting settings like private or state schools and nurseries. This rewarding career will see you supporting children and young people as well as the teacher. On this course you will firstly gain the knowledge you need to enhance your chances of securing a placement as a volunteer. secondly, you get off to a good start if you want start an apprenticeship in childcare or explore qualifications as a teaching assistant. The result will be that you will initially support the teacher setting up the classroom and preparing for activities. Then, you will be working with children on an individual, group, or whole class basis and feedback to the teacher on how the children are progressing.

Learning Support Assistant  – What will I learn?

To become really effective as a learning support assistant, you will start by understanding how children and young people develop. You’ll learn what the expected pattern of development for children and young people from birth to 19 years is. You will also learn about factors that influence development and what should happen if development is not as expected.

Module 2 is all about keeping children and young people safe. First part is about identifying risks to health, safety and security, helping others to recognise possible risks. Before moving onto what to do about accidents, illnesses and emergencies and how to manage any medications.

Next, its all about safeguarding children and young people. Legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding children and young people.

Finally, you need to know about the environments that you could work in. You will need an understanding of the structure of schools and colleges. Including what the ethos, mission aims and values are and how they define the core values of each different organisation.

Sometimes you might support children who have special educational needs (SEN).  The best activities will always be planned to support their social and emotional development. Additionally, you will learn how to keep records in relation to progress reporting and feedback.

Course Aim


This is ideal if you want to work in a school as it covers all the initial training and knowledge you need to secure a place as a volunteer, you don't have to be working in school to be able to do this as it is a knowledge only course.



This will encourage a better understanding of how children and young people develop, and how schools enhance and support a safe environment for children and young people to develop their skills, allowing you to understand how your own children are being supported, or in preparation for a return to work or change of career.



Upon completion of this course, you could gain a placement or job in a nursery, school, or college supporting learning and working with teachers to ensure that the pupils get the best they can from their classes. You will also know if this is the right career path for you and may chose to complete further studies to qualify in specialist areas.

Course Syllabus & Content

Module 1 - How children and young people develop

  • Expected pattern of development for children and young people from birth to 19 years.
  • Factors that influence children and young people’s development and how these affect practice.
  • How to monitor children and young people’s development and interventions that should take place if this is not following the expected pattern.

Module 2 - Support health and safety in a learning environment

  • Plan and provide environments that support children and young people’s health and safety
  • How to recognise and manage risks to health, safety and security in a learning environment or during off-site visits
  • Support children and young people to assess and manage risk for themselves
  • How to respond to accidents, incidents, emergencies and illness in the learning environment and during off-site visits
  • Your role in assisting in the administration of medication.

Module 3 - Safeguarding children and young people

  • Legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding children and young people.
  • Working in partnership with other organisations to safeguard children and young people.
  • The need to ensure children and young people’s safety and protection in the learning environment.
  • How to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been abused or harmed
  • Working with children and young people to support their well- being.

Module 4 - Schools and colleges as organisations

  • The structure of education from early years to post- compulsory education.
  • The organisation of schools and colleges in terms of roles and responsibilities.
  • Teamwork in schools and colleges
  • Educational ethos, mission, aims and values.
  • The purpose of policies and procedures in education.

Q: Do I have to take an exam?
No, successful completion of this course will be as a result of passing the end of lesson quizzes at a minimum of 80% as you progress through the course.

Q: Can I do the course if I live outside the UK?
Yes! This is an online course, so can be studied from anywhere, just remember that everything is in English.
